Atkai

(pseudonym of Atkai Akimovich Adzhamatov). Born June 14 (27), 1910, in the village of Ederei-aul, now in Khasaviurt Raion, Dagestan ASSR. Kumyk Soviet writer.

Atkai completed the higher literature courses at the M. Gorky Literature Institute (1963). His first poems were published in 1927. He is the author of the poem “Private Property Under Fire” (1933). The novella Tupau (1934) raises questions on the education of the new man. Atkai is the author of the dramas Ansar (1940), Steel Trap (1942), and Bridge of Friendship (1964); the novellas On the Kumyk Steppes (1953) and Adopted Brothers (1960), which are about the heroism and patriotism of the mountaineers during the war; the poems “Rabiat” (1957) and “Antlers” (1958); and the collection of verse Miraculous Hands (1966). He also writes for children and publishes works of Kumyk folklore. He has translated a number of works by N. V. Gogol, A. P. Chekhov, L. N. Tolstoy, and M. Gorky into the Kumyk language. Atkai has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and medals.
