High commission court
a court of ecclesiastical jurisdiction in England erected and united to the regal power by Queen Elizabeth in 1559. On account of the abuse of its powers it was abolished in 1641. |

The initial function of the High Commission Court was primarily to struggle against the Catholics. But from the mid-1560’s it persecuted mainly the Puritans, who were opponents of the state Anglican Church. This court, one of the instruments of English absolutism, was eliminated in 1641 in the course of the Bourgeois Revolution and finally abolished in 1689. |
