HemiramphidaeHemiramphidae(halfbeaks), a family of fishes of the order Beloniformes. Halfbeaks range in length from 6 to 60 cm. The lower jaw protrudes a bit more than the upper one. The mouth is small, and the pectoral fins are short. There are approximately ten genera, embracing 60 species. Halfbeaks usually live in schools near the surface of the water and feed on plankton. They are found mainly in coastal tropical and subtropical waters. One species, Hyporhamphus sajori, is commonly found in the summer off the coast of the Primor’e. There also are freshwater species, inhabiting the rivers of Southeast Asia and northern Australia. One species is raised in aquariums. The marine species lay eggs, whereas the freshwater species are viviparous. Species of the genus Oxyporhamphus are similar to the flying fishes of the family Exocoetidae. They are capable of flying a distance of 60 m. Hemiramphidae
