Atlantic Boreal Subregion

a marine zoogeo-graphic subregion of the Boreal Region. It is located in the northern hemisphere within the temperate zone of the Atlantic Ocean. The limits of the Atlantic Boreal Subregion are related to the distribution of the Gulf Stream passing within the subregion. Among the organisms particularly characteristic of this subregion are Phaeophyceae, including blade-kelp (Laminaria), Alaria, and fucus; red algae (Ahnfeltia); mollusks (mussels); crustaceans, including copepod crabs (for example, Calanus helgolandicus), shrimp, spiny lobster, and lobster (Homarus); and fish, including cod, haddock, pollack, flounder, smelt, mullet, and red surmullet. The characteristic species of birds are gulls, Atlantic murre, razorbill, and auks. Pinnipeds include the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) the harp seal, and the gray seal; cetaceans include the pilot whale. An oceanic break is observed in the distribution of certain organisms. (The organisms are found only off the eastern and western shores of the Atlantic Ocean.)
