International Committee of Slavists ICS

a scholarly organization that holds international congresses of Slavists every five years, attended by researchers in the languages, literatures, history, ethnography, and folklore of the Slavic peoples.

ICS coordinates the activity of national committees and supervises the work of such international commissions as those on the atlas of Common Slavic linguistics, the history of Slavic studies, Slavic literary languages, poetics, and stylistics, phonetics and phonology, lexicology and lexicography, medieval Slavic cultures, Balto-Slavic relationships, folklore, and the bibliography of works in linguistics and literary criticism. ICS is part of the system of educational and cultural organizations of UNESCO and unites the national committees of Slavists in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, the German Democratic Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Sweden, Switzerland, the USSR (the Soviet, Ukrainian, and Byelorussian committees of Slavists), the USA, and Yugoslavia.

ICS was founded in Yugoslavia (Belgrade, 1955) and concentrated its work at each subsequent site of its congresses: Moscow (1958), Sofia (1963), Prague (1968), and Warsaw (1973). ICS also holds annual conferences.
