an urban-type settlement in Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. It is located 30 km northeast of the city of Bor. Peat is extracted by peat-cutting machines.


Kerzhenets

 

a river in Gorky Oblast, RSFSR; left tributary of the Volga. Length, 290 km; basin area, 6,140 sq km. The Kerzhenets River flows primarily through a broad valley in the Volga-Vetluga lowland. The river is sinuous. At the mouth the river forms several branches. The mean annual flow rate at the mouth is 19.6 cu m per sec. The river freezes in November and thaws in April. Logs are floated.

From the 17th to the 19th century there were settlements (covert monasteries) of Old Believers in the dense pine and spruce forests along the Kerzhenets River.
