The minimal absolute elevation of the floor is 133 m. It has well-defined, often precipitous sides. On the floor are desert landscapes and an extensive salt bottom. In the basin are experimental oasis farms which use artesian well water, a permanent Astrakhan sheep-raising pasture, and a weather station.
