On Nov. 6, 1792, during the wars of the French Revolution, a battle was fought near Jemappes between French and Austrian troops. After the victory at Valmy, the French under General C. F. Dumouriez began an offensive in Belgium against the Austrians led by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (40,000 men), whose main forces (between 14,000 and 20,000 men) held fortified positions near Jemappes. After numerous attacks, the French (between 40,000 and 42,000 men) broke through the left wing of the enemy’s linear battle formation, routing it. The French owed their victory to the high morale of the troops and to a new striking tactic, in which battalion columns were combined with an extended formation of infantry. The victory resulted in the temporary occupation of Belgium by France. REFERENCEMarx, K., and F. Engels. Soch., 2nd ed., vol. 7, p. 500; vol. 14, p. 375.Jemappes |
