José Raúl Capablanca


Capablanca, José Raúl

 

(full name, José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera). Born Nov. 19, 1888, in Havana; died Mar. 8, 1942, in New York. Cuban chess player, world champion from 1921 to 1927.

Capablanca’s greatest successes were the victory over world champion E. Lasker and the first prize at international tournaments in San Sebastian (1911), London (1922), New York (1927), Moscow (1936), and Nottingham (1936), the last a tie with M. M. Botvinnik. Cuba has conducted international tournaments in Capablanca’s memory since 1962.
