Johannes Nkosi

Nkosi, Johannes

 

Born 1905, in Natal Province; died Dec. 17, 1930, in Durban, Natal Province. A figure in the workers’ movement of South Africa.

Nkosi, a Zulu, was a farm laborer as a youth and then worked in Johannesburg. He was active in the trade union movement and took part in a number of strikes. In 1926 he became a member of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA). He attended an evening school organized by the CPSA. In 1929, Nkosi established a Communist Party group in Durban. On Dec. 16, 1930, he was mortally wounded by the police during a mass meeting.
