Petrov, Ioakim Romanovich

 

Born Sept. 10 (22), 1893, in the village of Ivanovskaia, now in Leningrad Oblast; died Oct. 10, 1970, in Leningrad. Soviet pathophysiologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960). Major general in the military medical service.

Petrov graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1922 and subsequently worked under N. N. Anichkov and E. A. Kar-tashevskii (school of V. V. Pashutin). From 1926 to 1936 he was head of the laboratory of experimental biology at the Leningrad Institute of Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technology. In 1932 he organized the laboratory of experimental pathology at the Leningrad Institute of Blood Transfusion and the pathophysiological laboratory at the Leningrad Institute of the Tuberculosis of Bones and in 1946 became director of both laboratories. Beginning in 1938 he was head of the subdepartment of pathophysiology at the Leningrad Medical Institute. From 1939 to 1963 he was head of a subdepartment of the Military Medical Academy, and from 1963 to 1968 a consulting professor to the academy’s Scientific Council.

Petrov’s principal works were on the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention of posttransfusion complications, shock, and acute blood loss. He also dealt with problems of oxygen deficiency, electric trauma, and terminal states. Petrov developed the method of craniocerebral hypothermia. He founded a school of pathophysiologists and was chairman of the All-Union Society of Pathophysiologists from 1960 to 1967. Petrov was awarded an Order of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
