Ivan Ivanovich Novikov

Born Jan. 15 (28), 1916, in the village of Pobedinka, present-day Skopino Raion, Riazan’ Oblast. Soviet scientist in the physics of heat and heat engineering. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

After graduating from Moscow State University (1939), Novikov worked in scientific institutions of the Soviet Navy. From 1948 to 1950 he was the head of the subdepartment of the physics of heat at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, and from 1950 to 1956, head of the scientific and technical department of the Ministry of the Medium Machine-building Industry of the USSR. From 1956 to 1958 he was director of the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute; from 1958 to 1964, director of the Institute of the Physics of Heat of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; from 1964 to 1967, first vice-chairman of the State Committee on Standards of the Council of Ministers of the USSR; and from 1966 to 1970, head of the subdepartment of physical and engineering measurements at the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute. Since 1970 he has been the head of the laboratory for electron microscopy and physical research methods at the A. A. Baikov Metallurgical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Novikov’s main works deal with the thermodynamics of gases and solids, similarity theory in the physics of heat, the study of the thermophysical properties of heat-transfer agents, and the study of a number of problems associated with atomic energy. Novikov has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1951 and 1953), the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
