Ivanov-Vano, Ivan Petrovich

Born Jan. 27 (Feb. 8), 1900, in Moscow. Soviet film director and artist. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1969). Member of the CPSU from 1951.

Ivanov-Vano graduated from the State Higher Arts and Technical Studios in 1923. He became involved in animated films in 1924. His screen versions of Russian folk tales and classics, such as The Little Humped-back Horse (1948), Wild Geese (\\950), The Tale of the Dead Tsarevna and the Seven Bogatyrs (1951), The Snow Maiden (1952), Lefty (1964), Seasons of the Year (1969), and The Battle at Kerzhenets (1971), are among his best works. A number of Ivanov-Vano’s films have received prizes at international and all-Union film festivals. He began teaching at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in 1939, becoming a professor there in 1952. A recipient of the State Prize of the RSFSR in 1970, Ivanov-Vano has been awarded three orders and various medals.
