League of Sarnen
League of Sarnen
an alliance of the Swiss cantons of Schwyz, Uri, Unterwalden, Valais, Neuchâtel, and Basel, formed on Nov. 16, 1832, in the city of Sarnen. The League of Sarnen was formed to defeat the enactment of moderate liberal bourgeois reforms proposed by the Concordat of the Seven. It represented economically backward agricultural regions of Switzerland dominated by the clergy. The league disintegrated in 1833. In 1843–5 the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden joined the reactionary Sonderbund.
