M0470500 (mo͞ol′hīm, myo͞ol′-, mül′-) A city of west-central Germany on the Ruhr River east of Duisburg. First mentioned in 1093, it passed to Prussia in 1815 and is today a highly industrialized city with diverse manufactures.

The iron and steel industry is the most important, and the Thyssen and Rheinstahl concerns have plants there. Miilheim’s other industries include general machine building, electrical engineering, precision mechanical and optical equipment, and chemical, garment, footwear, and food-processing enterprises. The coal mines in the area were closed in 1966. The city is a railroad and highway junction; the river port’s freight turnover was 700,000 tons in 1971.
