Lebas, Philippe François Joseph

Born 1765 in Frévent, Pas-de-Calais Department; died July 27–28,1794, in Paris. French revolutionary, associate of M. Robespierre. A lawyer.

Lebas was elected to the National Convention in 1792. He voted to execute King Louis XVI. During the Jacobin dictatorship he was a member of the Committee of Public Safety. He and L. Saint-Just were sent as commissars of the Convention to the Army of the Rhine in October 1793 and to the Ardennes Army in January 1794. During the Thermidorean reaction (July 27–28, 1794), after unsuccessful attempts to organize resistance to the counterrevolutionaries, he committed suicide.
