It must be carried out by every male child whose father has died, for it is a ceremony in honor of the Igbo ancestors, or ndioki . Also known as Itensi, the ritual begins with a blood sacrifice of cocks, after which the blood is spread on wooden altars built specifically for the purpose. The sacrifice is followed by a feast during which communion is achieved both among the living and between the living and the dead.
