Long, Russell B. (Billiu)

(1918– ) U.S. senator; born in Shreveport, La. (son of Huey Long). Raised in a completely political environment, he served in the U.S. Senate (Dem., La.; 1948–87). He served as chairman of the Finance Committee and the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation. From 1965–69 he was the Democrats' majority leader, but a "revolt" by Northern liberals replaced him with Edward Kennedy.
