Nenitescu, Costin

Born July 2, 1902, in Bucharest; died there July 28, 1970. Rumanian organic chemist. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Socialist Republic of Rumania (1955).

Neniţescu’s main works were devoted to the catalysis of organic reactions by aluminum chloride, the chemistry of alicyclic and heterocyclic compounds, the chemistry of petroleum, and petrochemical synthesis. Neniţescu discovered that ethylene polymerizes upon the action of organic sodium compounds to form polyethylene. He also investigated many theoretical problems in organic chemistry. Nenitescu was a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966).
