Kiphuth, Robert (John Herman)

(1890–1967) physical educator; born in Tonawanda, N.Y. Perhaps the greatest swimming coach in history, Kiphuth retired after 41 years at Yale with a 528–12 dual meet record and 38 eastern intercollegiate and 14 national championships. He also coached American Olympic swimming teams (1928–48). He was awarded the Medal of Freedom (1963).
