Leicestershire Traffic Light System

A system used in Leicester (and other trusts) to rate the appropriateness of prescribing drugs under a shared care agreement (SCA), according to NICE guidelines.
Leicestershire Traffic Light System
• Green drugs—proven effective by NICE; drugs for which GPs would normally take full responsibility for prescribing and monitoring; a shared care agreement is not needed.

Examples
Aldapalene, buprenorphine, cifixime.
• Amber drugs—initially to be prescribed by a hospital specialist and then by a GP, where full agreement to share the care of each specific patient has been reached, requiring either
(1) specific patient monitoring or intervention (full SCA) or
(2) general patient monitoring (simple SCA).
Examples
Acetylcysteine, bicalutamide, cabergoline.
• Red drugs—should be prescribed only by hospital specialists.

Examples
Adalimumab, Botulinum A toxin, capsaicin.
• Black drugs—not recommended for use because of lack of evidence of clinical effectiveness, cost prioritisation or concerns over safety.

Adios, brinzolamide, Cannabis.
