Kliment Smoliatich

Kliment Smoliatich

(Klim Smoliatich). Date of birth unknown; died after 1154. Old Russian church writer; monk of the Zarub Monastery (near Kiev).

Kliment Smoliatich was made metropolitan of Kiev in 1147 by Prince Iziaslav Mstislavich without the sanction of the patriarch of Constantinople. After the death of Iziaslav in 1154, Kliment was forced to abandon the metropolitan see. Kliment was highly educated for his time. His Epistle to the Presbyter Foma of Smolensk documents the birth of free thought in church literature.
