Lenin Memorial

a public building in Ul’ianovsk, constructed from 1967 to 1970 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. I. Lenin (architects B. S. Mezentsev, M. P. Konstantinov, and G. G. Isakovich; engineer L. B. Fabrikant; Lenin Prize, 1972).

The building, which is faced with white marble, is marked by its solemn clarity and economy of form. Because of its carefully worked out design, it forms an organic part of the center of Ul’ianovsk. The memorial occupies a dominant position in the city, forming an ensemble with the pedagogical institute (based on the design of the State Institute of Design of Higher Educational Institutions, 1970) and the Hotel Venets (architect B. N. Banykin, 1970).

In the memorial’s open courtyard is the house in which V. I. Lenin was born and the monument M. A. Ul’ianova With Her Son Volodia (granite and bronze, sculptors P. I. Bondarenko and others). The Lenin Memorial houses a branch of the V. I. Lenin Central Museum with the Lenin Hall (mosaics by G. I. Opryshko; a marble figure of V. I. Lenin by P. I. Bondarenko), a library, a room for showing films, the House of Political Education, and a multipurpose hall with 1,400 seats. In the open square in front of the Lenin Memorial is the sculptural composition October (granite and bronze, sculptor O. A. Ikonnikov) and a pool with mosaics by Z. K. Tsereteli.
