Leonid Sretenskii

Born Feb. 14 (27), 1902, in Moscow; died there Aug. 8,1973. Soviet scientist in the fields of mechanics and mathematics. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939).

Sretenskii graduated from Moscow State University in 1923. He was affiliated with the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of Moscow State University from 1923 to 1929, with the Hy-drometeorological Institute from 1930 to 1934, with the Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute from 1931 to 1941, with the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1941 to 1945, and with the Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1951 to 1962. He became a professor at Moscow State University in 1934.

Sretenskii’s principal works deal with the theory of wave motions of a fluid and other subjects. In the theory of wave motions, he investigated such problems as tidal waves, waves of finite amplitude, waves produced by ships, and oscillations of fluids in vesseis. He also did work on the theory of equilibrium figures of a rotating fluid, the flow of a gas along a contour, the theory of the motion of a heavy body about a fixed point, and certain problems in mathematical physics, integral equations, and differential equations.

Sretenskii was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
