Louganis, Greg E.
(lo͞ogā`nĭs), 1960–, American diver, b. San Diego, Calif. He won gold medals in springboard diving and platform diving in the 1984 Olympics and repeated in both categories in 1988 despite a head injury incurred during the competition. In the 1990s he began a stage career, revealed that he had tested positive for HIV–the virus that causes AIDSAIDSor acquired immunodeficiency syndrome,
fatal disease caused by a rapidly mutating retrovirus that attacks the immune system and leaves the victim vulnerable to infections, malignancies, and neurological disorders. It was first recognized as a disease in 1981.
