Louis Gallait

Gallait, Louis

Born Mar. 10, 1810, in Tournai; died Nov. 20, 1887, in Brussels. Belgian painter.

Gallait’s romantic pictures on historical Belgian themes (The Last Moments of the Count of Egmont, 1848, the Hermitage, Leningrad; The Last Honors Paid the Remains of the Count of Egmont and Count Horn, 1851, Fine Arts Museum in Tournai), which reflect the ideas of the bourgeois-national liberation movement, are imbued with dramatic tension and manly sternness but are not free of academic traits. In his genre paintings Gallait also leaned to heroic images (The Fisherman’s Family, 1848 and 1855; Slavonets, 1854, the Hermitage).
