Mehmet Rauf

Born 1875, in Istanbul; died there Dec. 23, 1931. Turkish writer. Representative of the Servetifunun literary movement.

Mehmet Rauf graduated from a naval academy in 1893. In 1908 he left the service and devoted himself to literature. He published women’s journals. The last years of his life were spent in poverty. His first story, “Dü§mü§” (1891), attracted the attention of Halid Ziya U§akhgil, whose work had greatly influenced Mehmet Rauf. His psychological novel September (1901) was the first of its kind in Turkish literature.
