Barkov, Lev

Born Oct. 24, 1928, in Moscow. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1956.

After graduating from Moscow State University in 1952, Barkov joined the staff of the Institute of Atomic Energy. In 1967 he joined both the staff of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the teaching staff of the University of Novosibirsk. He was appointed a professor at the university in 1973.

Barkov’s main works deal with neutron moderation and multiplication in uranium-water systems. Barkov investigated pion production and the interaction of pions with matter. He wrote a number of works on the development of devices with strong pulsed magnetic fields for the study of the properties of elementary particles.

Barkov has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution and the Order of the Badge of Honor, as well as various medals.
