Chinese medicine
A herb, the root of which is analgesic and haemostatic. Notoginseng is used internally for bleeding from the nose and for the upper respiratory, urinary and lower GI tracts; topically, it is used for contusions, swelling, injuries, gunshot wounds and other external trauma; it is also used in sports medicine to increase stamina. Some data suggest that notoginseng may lower cholesterol, blood pressure, decrease anginal pain and possibly be of use in acute exacerbations of inflammatory bowel disease.
Toxicity
It should not be used in pregnancy.
