a city in northern Greece, in Macedonia in an intermontane depression opening onto the Aliakmon River valley. The administrative center of Kozani District. Population, 10,400 (1971). Cotton and food industries are there. Nearby, in Ptolemais, is a chemical energy complex based on brown coal mined locally. Chromium ore and asbestos are also mined in the Kozani region.
