Mariinsk

 

a city in Kemerovo Oblast, RSFSR. Located 180 km northeast of Kemerovo, on the Kiia River (Ob’ basin) where the Trans-Siberian Railroad crosses it. Population, 39,700 (1972). Alcohol and timber-industry combines, a meat-packing plant, a distillery, a brewery, a metalware plant, and garment, knitted goods, and furniture factories are located there. The city also has wood technology and agricultural technicums and a pedagogical school. Mariinsk arose in the 18th century as the village of Kiiskoe; in 1856 it became a city, and in 1857 it was renamed Mariinsk.
