Oberon

(oh -bĕ-ron) The outermost satellite of Uranus, discovered in 1787 by William Herschel. Photographed by Voyager 2, its surface shows some large craters with bright rays emanating from them and with dark patches on their floors, possibly due to eruptions of dirty water. Oberon also has large mountains up to 6 km high and steep curved slopes. See also Uranus' satellites; Table 2, backmatter.

a satellite of Uranus. Oberon is 1,460 km in diameter, and its mean distance from the center of Uranus is 587,000 km. Oberon was discovered in 1787 by W. Herschel. The plane of its orbit is almost perpendicular to the plane of Uranus’ orbit.
