On the town's outskirts is the Tjibaou Cultural Center, designed by Renzo Piano. The town was a French penal colony from 1864 to 1897. Nouméathe capital of New Caledonia, a French possession. Population, 57,800 (1971). Nouméa is a port on the Pacific Ocean. The chief industry is the smelting of nickel, and nickel, iron ore, and copra are exported through the port. |
