The selective evaluation of a complex situation with both positive and negative elements: positive mental filtering occurs when a person ignores or downplays negative aspects of a situation or criticism, which is typical of a manic reaction and indicates a skewed sense of reality; negative mental filtering prevents a person from coping with internal conflicts and emotions.
