Köln-Lindenthal

an early Neolithic settlement in a suburb of Cologne, Federal Republic of Germany. The settlement was investigated by W. Buttler between 1929 and 1934. The most ancient strata belong to the linear pottery culture, and the later strata to the culture of stroke-ornamented pottery. The remains of pile structures have been discovered; some investigators believe they were dwellings, others think they were barns. Pit houses, which are more recent in origin, have also been found. Later, the settlement was protected by a moat and fencing. The population engaged chiefly in farming using the hoe (barley, emmer). Similar remains have been found in Czechoslovakia and Poland.
