Lunkevich, Sergei Aleksandrovich

 

Born Apr. 29, 1934, in Kishinev. Soviet conductor, violinist, and composer. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976).

In 1957, Lunkevich graduated from the Kishinev Conservatory, where he had studied violin under I. L. Dailis; he graduated from the conducting class of the conservatory in 1958. In 1958 he became a violinist, artistic director, and conductor of the Fluerash Folk Orchestra of the Moldavian Philharmonic Society. Lunkevich is a collector of Moldavian folklore and an interpreter of Moldavian folk music. He has composed and arranged music for folk instrument orchestras and has also written songs.

Lunkevich received the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR in 1967, and he has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
