Location:In Cameron Parish in southern Louisiana.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, hiking, fishing, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Several hundred thousand ducks and geese use the refuge as a wintering habitat while wood ducks, fulvous and black-bellied whisting ducks, and mottled ducks nest here during the breeding season.
Habitats: Nearly 35,000 acres of water tolerant grasses, sedge, shrubs; vegetation in the undeveloped marshes is covered with maidencane and bull tongue. Refuge is dominated by Lacassine Pool, a 16,000-acre impounded freshwater marsh.
Access: Open year round from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset.
Wild life: Bald eagle, peregrine falcon, ibis, alligator, nutria, Louisiana black bear, black-bellied whisting ducks, pintails, and wood ducks.
