Morgan, Jacques Jean Marie de
Born June 3, 1857, in Huisseau-sur-Cosson, department of Loir-et-Cher; died June 12, 1924, in Marseille. French archaeologist.
Morgan conducted excavations in northern Iran and the Caucasus (burial grounds dating from the first millennium B.C.) from 1886 to 1889 and in Egypt (the tombs of the pharaohs of the First Dynasty in Neqada, a mastaba of the Sixth Dynasty in Saqqara) from 1892 to 1897. At the end of 1897, he began excavations in Susa (Iran), where he discovered Elamite inscriptions and a stela with the Code of Hammurabi. In 1907 he identified the Capsian culture in Tunisia. During the last years of his life, Morgan wrote a number of general works on history, archaeology, and ethnography, including a history of the Armenian people.
