[′er‚kō ′hüv·ər ′swēt·niŋ] (chemical engineering) Removal of mercaptans from gasoline by caustic and water washes, then heating the dried gasoline and passing it with some oxygen through a reactor containing a slurry of diatomaceous earth impregnated with copper chloride; the oxygen regenerates the catalyst.
