Nazar Matkarimovich Matchanov

Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Khiva, Khorezm Oblast, Uzbek SSR. Soviet statesman and party figure; doctor of veterinary sciences (1969); professor (1971). Member of the CPSU since 1949. Son of a handicraftsman.

Matchanov graduated from the Uzbek Agricultural Institute in 1949. From 1949 to 1959 he worked as the chief veterinarian of the raion agricultural section, as the chief of the veterinary section of the oblast agricultural administration, and as chief of the Veterinary Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Uzbek SSR. From 1959 to 1960 he was deputy minister of agriculture of the Uzbek SSR. From 1960 to 1961 he was secretary, and from 1962 to 1965 first secretary of the Bukhara Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan (CPU). From 1961 to 1962 he was deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Uzbek SSR. From 1965 to 1970, Matchanov was secretary of the Central Committee of the CPU. In September 1970 he became chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Uzbek SSR; in December 1970 he was made deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

At the Twenty-fourth (1971) and Twenty-fifth (1976) Congresses of the CPSU, Matchanov was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. In 1966 he became a member of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPU. He was a deputy to the seventh through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
