Messenhauser, Wenzei

Born Jan. 4, 1813, in Prossnitz, now Prostejov, Czechoslovakia; died Nov. 16, 1848, in Vienna. Austrian politician and writer.

Messenhauser joined the army in 1829 as a private and was promoted to officer in 1832. In the 1840’s he published several short stories and poems. During the October uprising of 1848 in Vienna, Messenhauser was appointed commander of the national guard and of all the rebel forces on October 12. On October 30 he signed, against the will of the popular masses, a statement on the capitulation of Vienna. He was shot by sentence of a military tribunal.
