Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute

the first and one of the largest schools and medical centers for stomatology in the USSR. It was founded in 1922 on the initiative of N. A. Semashko and P. G. Dauge as the State Institute of Dentistry. In 1927 it became the State Institute of Stomatology and Odontology; in 1932, the State Research Institute for Stomatology and Odontology; in 1935, the Moscow Stomatological Institute; and in 1949, the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute. Well-known stomatologists who have worked at the institute include B. N. Bynin, P. G. Dauge, I. G. Lukomskii, A. S. Pekker, E. E. Platonov, and Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR A. I. Evdokimov.

In 1973, the institute included the departments of stomatology and medical treatment; an evening division; a department for improving the qualifications of instructors; a graduate school; and a clinical residency program. It also included 54 subdepartments; three special problem laboratories and a central research laboratory; over ten clinics located in large Moscow hospitals (5, 000 beds); and a library with about 400, 000 volumes.

In the 1972–73 academic year, the institute had over 5, 500 students, more than 700 instructors and scientific workers, including 70 professors and doctors of sciences, and over 400 docents and candidates of sciences. The institute confers doctoral and candidate’s degrees. Scientific works and collections on current problems in stomatology have been published since 1923. Between 1939 and 1972, the institute trained about 9, 000 specialists. In 1972 it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
