Olonets Upland

an elevated area in the northwest of the European part of the USSR, primarily in the Karelian ASSR between the Svir’ River and the city of Petrozavodsk. Elevations to 313 m.

The Olonets Upland coincides with the aureole between the Baltic Shield and the Russian Plate, which is composed of Upper Proterozoic and Cambrian sedimentary rocks overlaid primarily by glacial deposits. The topography is very hilly and is associated with a belt of terminal moraines. Dotted by numerous lakes, the upland is traversed by the Vazhinka and Ivina rivers. Coniferous forests predominate.
