Lishev, Vsevolod Vsevolodovich

Born Sept. 25 (Oct. 7), 1877, in St. Petersburg; died Aug. 15, 1960, in Leningrad. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1957); academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949).

Lishev studied at the Academy of Arts (1906–13) with G. R. Zaleman and V. A. Beklemishev. He taught at the academy (1916–29 and 1947–60; professor in 1948), where his students included N. V. Tomskii, V. I. Ingal, and M. F. Baburin. In his sculptures (carefully modeled portraits, monuments, and genre compositions), Lishev developed the tradition of the Russian academic school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works include the portrait of A. P. Khanzhonkov (bronze, 1926), the portrait of D. I. Mendeleev (marble, 1952), and Mother (bronze, 1945–46), all in the Russian Museum in Leningrad; and a monument to N. G. Chernyshevskii in Leningrad (bronze, unveiled in 1947)—the model for the figure (bronze, 1940) is in the Tret’iakov Gallery (State Prize of the USSR, 1942). Lishev received the Order of Lenin.
