A salt that enhances various immune functions in vivo and in vitro, possibly by increasing IL-1 and/or IL-2 production, resulting in T-cell proliferation and increased natural killer cell activity. It is used as an antiviral against herpes, genital warts and certain viral infections the brain (e.g., measles complicating subacute sclerosing panencephalitis). Some believe it may be useful in managing HIV disease: in a trial of HIV-positive subjects, less than 0.5% of those treated with inosine prabonex developed AIDS versus 4% in the placebo group.
