Nikolai Rimskii-Korsakov

Rimskii-Korsakov, Nikolai Petrovich

Born Nov. 21 (Dec. 2), 1793, in St. Petersburg; died there Oct. 31 (Nov. 12), 1848. Russian naval leader and educator; vice admiral (1848).

Rimskii-Korsakov graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps in 1807. He fought in the Patriotic War of 1812. From 1816 he served in the navy. He took part in a number of sea campaigns and voyaged around the world from 1823 to 1826 under the command of O. E. Kotsebu. Rimskii-Korsakov fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29. He became assistant director of the Naval Cadet Corps in 1842 and its director in 1843. He strengthened the practical nature of the corps’ education and contributed to the development of the corps’ museum. An island in the Pacific Ocean was named after Rimskii-Korsakov.
