Baghdadi Shauki

 

Born July 26, 1928, in Banias. Syrian writer. Graduate of the Higher Pedagogical Institute. Secretary of the League of Arab Writers since 1954.

Baghdadi Shauki has published in literary journals. His first collection of short stories, Our Block Spits in Blood, came out in 1954. He is also the author of the verse collections More Than One Heart (1955) and Each Love Has Its Story (1956). A representative of the democratic and humanistic trend, Baghdadi Shauki writes about the simple toilers and the intelligentsia, about their lives under the conditions of the contemporary struggle for social rights and the cultural rebirth of the country. His artistic style reveals the influence of French impressionism.
