Nikolai Vasilevich Martynov

Born Apr. 13 (26), 1910, in Moscow. Soviet state figure. Hero of Socialist Labor (1980). Member of the CPSU since 1932.

The son of a worker, Martynov studied at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute from 1929 to 1932. Between 1934 and 1941 he held, at different times, the positions of chief mechanic, chief engineer, and director at a series of defense industry plants. He served as deputy people’s commissar of ammunition of the USSR from 1941 to 1946. Martynov was deputy minister of tractor and agricultural machine building of the USSR from 1946 to 1957; between 1957 and 1962 he was first deputy chairman and chairman of the Council of the National Economy of the Tashkent Economic Region and chairman of the Council of the National Economy of the Uzbek SSR. He served as secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan from 1962 to 1964.

In 1964 and 1965, Martynov was deputy chairman of the Council of the National Economy of the USSR; he held the rank of a minister of the USSR. He was first deputy chairman of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR for Material and Technical Supply from 1965 to 1976 and was named chairman in 1976. In 1978, Martynov became chairman of the State Committee of the USSR for Material and Technical Supply; at the same time he continued to hold the position of deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, to which he had been named in 1976. Martynov was a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU from 1961 to 1966. A deputy to the sixth through tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, he became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1981.

Martynov has received the State Prize of the USSR and has been awarded two orders of Lenin, seven other orders, and various medals.
