On the eastern border of KS, south of Olathe; organized as Lykins County Aug 25, 1855 (prior to statehood); name changed Jun 3, 1861. Name Origin: For the Miami Indians, an Algonquin tribe. Origin of name uncertain; probably from Ojibway oumaumeg 'people of the peninsula' or from Delaware we-mi-a-mik 'all friends.'
