Abder-Rahman Khan

Abder-Rahman Khan

Born 1844; died Oct. 1, 1901. Emir of Afghanistan from 1880.

Abder-rahman Khan’s policy of centralization contributed to the elimination of petty feudal fiefs and to the strengthening of the country’s economy. In his efforts to utilize the contradictions between the great powers, he strove to achieve an integral state. However, he had to acknowledge the imposition in 1880 of British control over foreign relations and the adjustment in 1893 of the southern and southeastern boundaries of Afghanistan to the so-called Durand line, which placed under British control territory in India with a large Afghan population.
